2000 Christian Dior Runway Documented Blue Metallic Lace Slip Dress

This ethereal lace gown was designed by John Galliano for Christian Dior’s Fall 2000 ready-to-wear collection, relatively early in what would become one of the most celebrated periods in the house’s modern history. Lace and diaphanous fabrics featured prominently throughout the collection; Vogue particularly noted its “miraculously cut” lace and chiffon dresses. Baby-blue glittering lace appeared on the strappy camisole of Look 25, while Look 33 featured a pale pink lace gown with a similarly low, dropped-waist silhouette. Tailored from delicate baby-blue lace patterned with abstract florals and roses, the fabric is shot throughout with fine silver metallic thread, giving the surface a subtle glisten as it moves. The slender spaghetti straps are doubled and formed from tightly rolled lengths of the same silver-flecked lace. The dress is closely fitted through the body, with the front double-layered in lace down to the dropped waist. From below the hips, the skirt flares gently into a softly pleated shape that creates considerably more movement towards the hem. The colour is subtly ombréd through the skirt, deepening from blue into charcoal grey at the bottom. Unlike the more overtly sheer versions shown on the runway, this dress is lined in navy silk, making it a more wearable commercial interpretation of the collection while retaining the delicacy and transparency of the lace at the surface. It fastens beneath the left arm with concealed snap closures. The dress is in very good condition. A tear to the lace at the rear has been carefully repaired by our in-house couture tailor and is barely noticeable when worn. It is composed of 81% polyamide and 19% Lurex, with a 100% silk lining.
